Nelson Mandela Buried After State Funeral

QUNU, South Africa (AP) — Anti-apartheid champion Nelson Mandela was buried in his home village on Sunday after a funeral that mixed ancient tribal rituals with a display of the might of the new, integrated South Africa.
Military officers, both black and white, rolled Mandela's flag-draped coffin to the family burial plot in the village of Qunu. Formations of planes and military helicopters, South African flags flapping from the bellies,

flew over the green hills where thousands of mourners had gathered.

Unlike a public memorial service on Tuesday at a stadium that was rife with problems, the funeral and burial — broadcast on many TV channels — went smoothly, although behind schedule. The ceremonies mixed solemnity with joy at Mandela's accomplishments, lasted all morning and into the afternoon and were fit for African royalty. Mandela, South Africa's first black president, is descended from royalty.
Several thousand gathered in a huge white tent at the Mandela family compound for the state funeral that preceded a private service at the gravesite. Songs, speeches and the boom of artillery rang across the fields and a tribal chief draped in animal skin declared: "A great tree has fallen."
Mandela, who spent 27 years in jail as a prisoner of the racist white government and emerged to lead a transition to a multiracial democracy, died on Dec. 5 at the age of 95 after a long illness.

BREAKING NEWS: Nelson Mandela Dies

BREAKING NEWS: Nelson Mandela Dies
Former South African President Nelson Mandela died peacefully at his Johannesburg home on Thursday, December 5, after a prolonged lung infection.
Mandela, the country's first black president and anti-apartheid icon, would receive a full state funeral, President Jacob Zuma said, ordering flags to be flown at half mast.
"Fellow South Africans, our beloved Nelson Rohlihla Mandela, the founding president of our democratic nation, has departed. ... Our people have lost a father. Although we knew this day was going to come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, passion and humanity, earned him their love," Zuma said.
Mandela spent nearly three months in the hospital through September, initially to treat a lung infection.
Nelson Mandela led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison. He negotiated with the nation's white leaders toward establishing democracy and was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994. He stepped down after five years in office.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Nelson Mandela was many things to many people, but his sense of humor, his dry wit and his remarkable ability to render someone speechless with a well-placed one-liner, is a separate topic worth to be remembered.
He was not the kind of man to fall over in laughter or to guffaw loudly. He did not make silly gaffes, inappropriate innuendos or stupid jokes. Instead, just like the rest of him, his humor was dignified, statesmanlike and perhaps a little old-fashioned.
Some of Mandela's jokes were well-used and a bit cheesy, but that did not detract from their simplicity and effectiveness.
